Eternal Flame

A “crypt” is a chamber beneath the main floor. The Capitol Crypt’s general appearance has remained constant since the central section of the Capitol was finished in the 1820s, with the exception of a 10-foot hole that originally pierced the center of the ceiling. The hole was sealed in 1828 due to damp drafts that were damaging the paintings in the Rotunda; but there really was a flame in the crypt and there really was a “Keeper of the Crypt”. Just as Dan Brown said.

Columns made of Aquia Creek Virginia sandstone and arches support the Rotunda floor. During the early Civil War, the Crypt was used to store flour needed to bake bread for Union soldiers stationed in the nation’s capital.

The Crypt contains educational displays of the architectural and historical development of the Capitol, including one of the original sandstone column capitals from the East Front Portico.

The circle was originally considered to mark the boundary between the downtown section of 14th Street and the emerging uptown 14th Street neighborhood. Erected in 1879, the statue of General George Henry Thomas was designed by John Quincy Adams Ward. The neoclassical National City Christian Church building was designed by John Russell Pope and completed in 1930.

Daniel Webster

1782 – 1852

Pre-Civil War, era American statesman Daniel Webster negotiated the Webster-Ashburton Treaty defining the Eastern border between the United States and Canada. This statue is located near his former home at 1603 Massachusetts Avenue. The Daniel Webster Memorial consists of a 12-foot (3.7 m) bronze statue of Webster on an 18-foot (5.5 m) granite pedestal in a sober classical style. The statue was sculpted by Gaetano Trentanove. On the east and west sides of the pedestal are bronze bas-relief panels illustrating events in Webster's life. One panel illustrates his suggestion to Senator Robert Hayne that to secede from the Union is illegal. The second panel illustrates Webster's speech at the dedication of the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston. Webster's statement, "Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and Inseparable" is engraved on one side of the memorial.

PASUGUAN NG PILIPINAS

Coat Of Arms

Located at 1600 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036, the Chancery stands directly behind the standing figure of Daniel Webster, the “Expounder of the US Constitution” along Scott Circle. Webster’s statue faces Scott circle from the west. The Statue was donated by Stilson Hutchins, founder of the Washington Post, and unveiled in January 1900 by Jerome Bonaparte, Webster’s great grandson.

The classic lines of the Chancery building allows it to blend with the older, imposing buildings along Massachusetts Avenue. It stands alone on the block at the intersection of 17th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, facing the Johns Hopkins University Building, with the Embassy of Peru at the right side and Beacon Hotel at the back, along N Street.

Pineapple Finial

a universal symbol of hospitality and welcome

Unknown to most, each pineapple plant gives its own life to produce a single fruit. Upon its western discovery by Christopher Columbus around 1681, the pineapple has been recognized as a Christian symbol. Around this time, designers and architects began using pineapple finials on church tops, newel posts, hand rails and curtain rod ends.
