Early Railroad Signals to Prevent Disaster

When Railroading began there were no set signals and trains were not equipped with whistles or bells. The need to communicate between trains and passersby quickly became apparent. Misinterpreted or ignored signals caused by faulty equipment, human error, and bad weather could easily lead to disaster. This plaque shows the early signals used to avoid such situations.
