According to L’Enfant’s plan, Maryland Avenue was to be the mirror of Pennsylvania Avenue, bracketing the Mall.

Some people believe Maryland Avenue, running from the Capitol to Thomas Jefferson Memorial (left), represents the second leg of the compass.
