The world's largest tree-dwelling animal, the orangutan relies upon its intelligence and well-adapted body to survive in the tropical rainforest.

Orangutang are Asia's largest primates. Males are about twice the size of females, standing four and a half feet tall and weighing 130 to 200 pounds. Females stand about two and a half feet tall and weigh 90 to 110 pounds.

This past 4th of July, the National Zoo celebrated the opening of a new bird exhibit—The Bald Eagle Refuge.

At the same time as the opening of the Refuge, the Zoo welcomed the arrival of two eagles from a rehabilitation center in Tennessee.

The Bald Eagle Refuge is located along the Zoo’s Beaver Valley, across from the Mexican wolves.

Found injured in the wild, these two Bald Eagles can't fly anymore, but are safe here at the National Zoo's Refuge.

The refuge allows visitors to view the eagles in a setting similar to the birds’ wild habitat.

Bald eagles have lived up to 48 years in zoos, although their life span in the wild is likely far shorter.
