The L'Enfant Trust is a public, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 1978 to protect and promote the beauty of Washington's streets, or in the language of its charter, to "promote a public aesthetic in land use planning." Named after the planner of the federal city, Pierre L'Enfant, the Trust has pioneered the use of the Conservation Easement - a unique and powerful preservation tool – to protect Washington's historic buildings and neighborhoods. The L'Enfant Trust now provides responsible, community stewardship for more than one thousand Washington D.C. properties protected by its Conservation Easements.
