Low Rez - Hi Fi

An interactive sound and light garden, "Low Rez/Hi-Fi," by MIT professors Eric Howeler and J. Meejin Yoon entices before entering the building

Developer Abby Stillman wanted to rebrand a 1960's office building in Washington, DC. He sought out MIT architects Meejin Yoon and Eric Howeler, who proposed an interactive installation that spilled out from the lobby to the sidewalk.

The result is an installation called Low Rez Hi Fi; the first half of the name refers to three LED display screens and the second to a grove of stainless steel poles that create sound when touched. These pieces transformed a spacious but otherwise drab sidewalk into an interactive field of sound and light that responds in different ways to people in a public space.

Parallel designed, manufactured and installed the Low Rez LED screens in 2006. We were then asked to complete the unfinished sound grove in 2007.

The installation was featured in the Cooper Hewitt's 2006 Design Trienneal. We designed and built a smaller vitrine using the excess display modules from our manufacturing run. This exhibition went on to the Institue of Contemporary Arts in Boston, MA and the Contemporary Art Museum Houston.

Perseus (also known as the "Son of the bright morning") was the hero who killed Medusa and claimed Andromeda, having rescued her from a sea monster.

Danaë was the daughter of Acrisius the king of Argos. She had been seduced by Acrisius’ brother Proetus, and it had been foretold that Acrisius himself would have no male heirs, and that his own grandson would kill him. So he locked his daughter Danaë in a bronze dungeon, and thought he would thwart the prophecy. The princess, receives the interest of the mightiest god. Zeus came to Danaë in the form of a shower of gold, to seduce and impregnate her.

When Danaë's son Perseus was born, her father placed the mother and child into a wooden box, and set it adrift on the sea. A fisherman found it washed ashore the island called Seriphos, and took Danaë and Perseus to the local king, Polydectes, who welcomed them to share his palace.
