On September 11, 2001, flight 93 crashed north of Somerset County with 45 people aboard. The flight was coming from Newark, NJ and headed to San Francisco. The crash occurred at 10 am, following the attacks in Washington DC and New York City. There is a temporary memorial at the crash site, a former strip mine that is now a grassy field surrounded by woods.
