Pentagon Freedom Walk

Thousands of Americans converged on National Mall for the annual 'America Supports You Freedom Walk' to honor the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and America's servicemembers, as well as to celebrate freedom. "It's important for us as a nation, because we stand as one against forces that would take away all the things that are important in our lives," said the Pentagon Chaplain, Army Col. William, Brooke, who read the 23rd Psalm and led a moment of silence and prayer before the walk began. Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Lincoln Tomb

Dedicated in 1874, Lincoln Tomb is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary, and three of their four sons, Edward, William, and Thomas. The eldest son, Robert T. Lincoln, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

On April 15, 1865, the day after President Lincoln's assassination, a group of Springfield citizens, learning that the body would be returned to Illinois for burial, formed the National Lincoln Monument Association and spearheaded a drive for funds to construct a memorial/tomb. Upon arrival of the corpse on May 3, it lay in state in the capitol for a night, and after the funeral the next day was placed in a receiving vault, constructed ca. 1860, at Oak Ridge Cemetery, the site Mrs. Lincoln had requested for burial. 2010 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The 2010 Smithsonian Institute Folklife Festival kicked off June 24, 2010 in Washington DC to record heat in the nation's capital. Running from June 24-28 and July 1-5, the festival features outstanding examples of different cultures worldwide, bringing them front and center, on display, so their traditions and cultures can be enjoyed by the general public on the National Mall. This year's featured cultures are Asian Pacific Americans and Mexico.
Hours are 11 AM to 5:30 PM with special events planned almost every evening.
