- Nisei Week is the longest continuing Japanese cultural event in the mainland United States. Originally started by the Nisei (second-generation Japanese Americans) in 1934 during the Great Depression, the festival was designed to attract business to the Little Tokyo area, as well as promote general goodwill. The forced removal of the Japanese Americans from the West Coast during World War II led to the curtailment of the festival until 1949. The festival, featuring ondo (folk dancing), cultural exhibits, parade and queen pageant, has continued every year since.
