In heavily-developed Fairfax County, stream valleys are our last opportunity to create a long network of interconnected off-road trails. Yet such trails, where they exist at all, are fragmented and disconnected. Fairfax Trails and Streams (FTAS), a grassroots trail and environmental advocacy group, aims to create this network, and help protect the watershed. Our primary projects are the Pimmit Run Trail in McLean and the Fairfax Cross-County Trail.

In 1996, the National Park Service assigned staff in the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA) to explore in use of the designation and to assist local governments, citizen groups, state agencies and other federal agencies interested in developing trails and related resources.
