In 1774, Thomas Jefferson convinced an Italianwinemaker, Filippo Mazzei, to move onto land adjoiningJefferson's home, Monticello, located in Charlottesville,Virginia. At Jefferson's urging, Mazzei agreed to growEuropean vinifera wines, and he soon produced twobarrels of wine from six of the best varieties of wildgrapes. Upon sampling his creation, Mazzei was verypleased with Virginia's grapes and soil. He foundVirginia land to be superior to that of Italy: "In myopinion, when the country is populated in proportion toits extent, the best wine in the world will be made here...I do not believe that nature is so favorable to growing vines in any country as this." efferson Vineyards welcomes visitors for complimentary tours and tastings. Vineyard guests may sample our many wines, and, in our gift shop, browse through a variety of gifts ranging from mulling wine spices and signature T-shirts to books on Jefferson and cooking with wine. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on our deck with lovely mountain views. Jefferson vineyards is open daily from 11 am to 5 pm, tours are conducted daily, on the hour, between 12 and 4 pm.
