Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives are available for buildings listed in the National Register--and certain historic districts--that are substantially rehabilitated for income-producing purposes according to standards set by the Secretary of the Interior. Jointly managed by the NPS and the IRS in partnership with State Historic Preservation Offices, the program rewards private investment by providing a 20% tax credit for rehabilitating historic buildings. The program has been responsible for more than 27,000 historic properties being rehabilitated through private investment of over $17 billion.

The Homeowners Assistance Program was enacted by Congress in Section 1013 of the Demonstration Cities and Metropolitan Development Act of 1966. This law provides for assistance to eligible federal personnel, who were stationed at or near an installation scheduled for closure or realignment and who, through no fault of their own, are unable to sell their homes under reasonable terms and conditions.
