Founded and endowed by Andrew Mellon in 1937, the National
Gallery of Art boasts a vast collection of artworks, from Van
Eyck to Calder. It also plays host to visiting exhibits by
artists like Rodin, whose works occupied the I.M.PEI-designed
East Wing for a short period of time.
The East Wing, added in 1978, offers an angular contrast to the
neoclassical design of the main Gallery building. In addition to
its galleries and exhibits, the National Gallery of Art holds a
gift shop and a basement-level dining area whose glass-covered
ceiling provides a birds-eye view for Mall pedestrians.
