THE NATIONAL MALL

DC Pages / History of DC / The Mall

The National Mall's design came directly from Pierre L'Enfant's original vision of long, wide avenues stretching through the Nation's Capital.

At one end of the Mall lies the Capitol building; at the opposite end is the Washington Monument. Museums and Federal Departments line the length of the Mall; information booths and refreshment stands are situated near its center. A Merry-Go-Round sits behind the Smithsonian Castle, on the Mall, as well as a central kiosk for purchasing TourMobile tickets.
