Depleted Uranium in the Gulf (II)

http://deploymentlink.osd.mil/du_library/du_ii/

Many Gulf War veterans have expressed concern their unexplained illnesses may result from their experiences in that war. In response to veterans’ concerns, the Department of Defense (DoD) established a task force in June 1995 to investigate those incidents and circumstances relating to possible causes. The Office of the Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense for Gulf War Illnesses assumed responsibility for these investigations on November 12, 1996, and gathered information on depleted uranium. This is the second interim report on depleted uranium; it updates the August 4, 1998 Environmental Exposure Report, "Depleted Uranium in the Gulf."

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iraq/rg.htm

The Republican Guard is the best of the Iraqi ground forces. The RGFC is Iraq's most capable and loyal force, and receives the best training and equipment. It began as an elite organization tasked with regime protection. This organization served as the core around which to build an elite offensive force, which grew dramatically during the last two years of the war with Iran. During the Iran-lraq war this organization was expanded from a Palace Guard of one brigade into a separate force -- the Republican Guard Forces Command -- of thirty to thirty-three brigades in seven divisions.

How and why is deleted uranium used?

http://deploymentlink.osd.mil/du_library/

DU can be used by DoD to engage the enemy at greater distances than tungsten penetrators or high explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds because of improved ballistic properties. U.S. forces also use DU to enhance their tanks’ armor protection. In one noteworthy incident, an M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank, its thick steel armor reinforced by a layer of DU sandwiched between two layers of steel, rebuffed a close-in attack by three of Iraq's T-72 tanks.

Iraq History and Culture from Noah to Present

http://home.achilles.net/~sal/iraq_history.html

In ancient times the land area now known as modern Iraq was almost equivalent to Mesopotamia, the land between the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates (in Arabic, the Dijla and Furat, respectively), the Mesopotamian plain was called the Fertile Crescent. This region is known as the Cradle of Civilization; was the birthplace of the varied civilizations that moved us from prehistory to history. An advanced civilization flourished in this region long before that of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, for it was here in about 4000BC that the Sumerian culture flourished.

War with Iraq

http://www.dcmessageboards.com/index.php?showtopic=8440

Iraq's economy is dominated by the oil sector, which has traditionally provided about 95% of foreign exchange earnings. In the 1980s financial problems caused by massive expenditures in the eight-year war with Iran and damage to oil export facilities by Iran led the government to implement austerity measures, borrow heavily, and later reschedule foreign debt payments.
