Of course, dining out is popular, and DC has some fine romantic spots that offer gourmet meals in stylish, cozy settings. 2 Quail (320 Mass. Ave., NE, 202-543-8030) is arguably one of DC's best kept romantic secrets nestled in a Victorian townhouse near Union Station on Capitol Hill. Three cozy dining rooms are furnished with a mix of antiques, and patrons nestle in overstuffed sofas and chairs for a wonderfully homespun feeling. All this Valentine's Day weekend, 2 Quail will feature a special four-course dinner from 5-11pm; the $125 per couple price includes champagne. Georgetown's historic row houses provide a wonderful backdrop for couples to stroll and browse galleries, book shops and boutiques. Dining in Georgetown can be romantic too. A well-kept secret is Café La Ruche (1039 31st St., NW, 202-965-2684). Located a few doors below the C&O Canal in a petite row house, diners will enjoy French cuisine and some of the best homemade pastries in DC. This is a perfect spot for a romantic rendez-vous! Another Georgetown spot for romance - weather permitting - is Washington Harbor located along K St. at the bottom of Wisconsin Ave. The Harbor is home to the fine dining experience of Sequoia (202-944-4200), which features panoramic views of the Potomac River and Kennedy Center. After dining, stroll along the waterfront amid the sparkling lights of the surrounding trees. The posh Four Seasons hotel (2800 Penna. Ave. 202-944-2000) is a wonderful spot for a Valentine's weekend get-a-way. The hotel recently spent millions to revamp its health club, pool and new spa. Spend a weekend in the lap of luxury walking distance from all Georgetown attractions, and for such classy accommodations, $275-$295 for a double with parking isn't bad. Season's, the hotel's restaurant, is a delightful spot for a stylish dinner with impeccable service and a dining room furnished to include many tables that are isolated for the privacy of romantic couples. Of course, many couples will dine out over the Valentine's Day weekend. Prior to a night out, why not treat special Valentine to a full spa day? Salons like Tara (2715 M St. 202-333-8099) offer packages like massage, facial, manicure and blowdry for $114. What better way to pamper a special guy or gal? Washington is a town rich in theaters, art galleries and monuments, and time spent among them can provide romance combined with culture for a Valentine treat. A show to try is the Arena Stage's current production of "Guys and Dolls" performed in a theater-in-the-round venue. For a special gallery visit, try the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle. Couples can browse among the fine representation of Impressionist paintings from Renoir to Degas, and afterward, stroll through Dupont Circle's boutiques and cafes. The stately halls of the National Gallery of Art, located along the National Mall, can provide hours of strolling for couples desiring to see a fine collection of art from the Renaissance to present. Finally, why not let the rich history of DC's monuments provide a backdrop for a moonlight stroll or drive? Monuments are lit at night and look all the more stately and majestic in the darkness. Remember, when giving gifts this Valentine's Day, remember, less is often more. Either men or women can make a special gift to their Valentine with something as simple as a framed photograph of either themselves or the couple. The photo will certainly last longer than flowers or candy and provides a lasting memory beyond Valentine's Day. Remember, make the spirit of love so prevalent during Valentine's Day last all year! |
