Agua Ardiente
Agua Ardiente is a new and welcome addition to the West End's restaurants. The food is authentic Cuban-Spanish and the prices are unbelievably reasonable. Add to this a lively bar scene and this is certainly a place to visit.

Cafe Citron
In both food and decor, "lemon, lime, and orange are our emphasis," says Clelia Beridaogue, general manager of the welcoming Cafe Citron. There's Ceviche to eat and fresh fruit juices to sip. Chef Jesse Castro weighs in with dishes that traverse Latin America, including chicken stew from Bolivia, fajitas from Mexico, and a sub-sandwich peppered with Caribbean jerk seasoning. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant is as sunny as it gets in the city.

El Chalan
El Chalan Restaurant was founded in 1975 be Pedro Espinoza and Elsa Cervantes de Espinoza. They were two Peruvian nationals that emigrated to the United Staters with a dream to provide a better life for themselves and their family. To sample Peruvian food at it's best, El Chalan is still hard to beat. It's arroz con mariscos and seco de res (a beef stew) top the menu. But so does its ever popular lomo saltado and papas a la huancaina. The ceviche is also a house specialty. For dessert, make sure you leave room for the flan and the alfajores (wafers with caramel rolled in confectioner's sugar).

South Beach Restaurant & Bar
They describe the cooking as "American, with a South Florida influence and a Cuban twist." Richardson's entrées at the art-deco-style restaurant include Chilean sea bass on a bed of arugula, chorizo, clams, and leeks; pan-seared, vanilla-dusted sea scallops; and sautéed medallions of beef tenderloin served with roasted peppers and a mushroom-and-black-bean compote. Desserts include Cuban Tres Leches, Florida Key lime pie, and banana flan. Wine and beer are served. At lunch the entrée prices range from $6.50 to $9; at dinner from $13.50 to $18.50.

The Grill From Ipanema
With the exception of a few churrascarias, which offer all-you-can-eat mixed grills and salad bars, Brazilian restaurants are a rarity on the local ethnic-dining scene. Even those with good kitchens could not survive solely with the support of the small Brazilian community. The caipirinhas – extra-strength clear liquor barely diluted with fresh limes – make you feel young and beautiful and on vacation. Try the feijoada, the black bean stew filled with a mysterious conglomeration of sausages and pork parts, to be spooned over rice and complemented with orange wedges, shredded collards and grainy farofa. 1858 Columbia Road NW, Washington, DC 20009
