Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad

http://www.bccrs.org

In 1937, the ambulance service in the northwest section of Washington DC was extremely poor and the Bethesda Fire Department was operating only one old ambulance. The need for additional service in these areas provided the motivation to fill this void. A small group of twenty-five persons, both male and female, organized into The Chevy Chase First Aid Corps. Headquarters forthis operation was a tiny garage located at 38th & Military Road, NW (near Connecticut Avenue). The group handled emergency calls, routine transports, and first aid coverage at horse shows, baseball games, football games, etc. The first ambulance was a 1928 Nashpurchased from the Brentwood Fire Department for $100.00. This was followed by a second and then a third ambulance. In the fall of 1941, the Corps was disbanded because a large number of volunteers were drafted to serve in World War II. All the equipment was soldand the proceeds were dedicated to restarting the group after the war.
