After the winter thaw, blooming cherry blossoms draw thousands of locals and visitors to Washington, DC every year. Making their appearance in late March or early April, the beautiful pink and white lace-like flowers surround DC's Tidal Basin. This yearly sign of spring is one of Washington, DC's natural highlights. If you've never seen it before, make plans join the loyal cherry blossom followers. In celebration of spring, DC hosts its annual Cherry Blossom Festival. Depending on mother nature, the festival may or may not coincide with the peak of the cherry blossoms. The festival features concerts, special exhibits, a parade, performances, cherry tree planting, athletic competitions and other events at various locations in Washington, DC. When the crowds at the Tidal Basin get too thick, local know where to head uptown. They enjoy more of the beautiful cherry blossoms at the Japanese Embassy and Kenwood in nearby Maryland.
